Wichita Falls is known as the “Gateway to Texas” and is the county seat of Wichita County located in north Texas, a 2 hour drive northwest from Dallas/Fort Worth on Highway 287 and 2 hours southwest from Oklahoma City on I-44.. There is a diverse international community attracted by the Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training program at Sheppard Air Force Base. Military Pilots from countries all over the world are trained right here. Instructor pilots are brought in from other NATO countries. Sheppard AFB is the largest technical training training base in the Air Force where members of all services obtain their initial technical training certifications in fields such as aircraft maintenance, civil engineering, and communications. Many military members are brought to Wichita Falls by being stationed at Sheppard AFB and end up loving the community so much they decide to stay after retiring or separating from the military.
